DS Smith Packaging – Re-route of 6” Steel Natural Gas Pipework

About the client:

DS Smith Packaging is a leading provider of sustainable packaging solutions, paper products, and recycling services worldwide. Over the past 80 years, their organisation has grown dramatically, as have their services and areas of expertise.

Project background:

DS Smith Packaging approached Control Technology UK for assistance with the re-routing of a 6” carbon steel gas pipe, which ran externally from the meter house to the main building. Due to ongoing developments, DS Smith Packaging required the 6” gas pipe to be re-routed as the existing route would be impeding on a proposed water tank installation.

Due to our long-standing professional relationship, Control Technology UK approached Enright Environmental to plan the project and carry out the installation. During the initial site survey, it was also noted that there was no means of isolating the gas supply at the gas entry point of the building, which is necessary for compliance purposes.

Project solution:

Working closely with DS Smith Packaging, Enright Environmental planned the new route for the gas pipework. The proposed route was approximately 3.5m in height so it was necessary to fabricate floor-standing supports for the pipework. The project had a tight timescale for completion since DS Smith Packaging relies on gas-fed process boilers for a large amount of their production process.

The gas supply was only able to be isolated between 2 pm on Friday and 7 pm on Sunday. However, fabrication and installation of the floor standing supports could be carried out before then. It was proposed that a gas safety solenoid valve be installed at the gas entry point of the building, which could be connected to an emergency stop button at a low level so the building’s gas supply could be quickly isolated in emergencies. This type of safety valve can also be linked to the building’s fire alarm system, so the valve will close if the fire alarm is triggered.

Project result:

Working closely with Goodfab Ltd, fabrication and installation of the floor standing supports began. Once the supports had been installed and the gas supply was able to be isolated, the existing gas system was safely purged and decommissioned per industry regulations. Once purged, the existing gas pipework could be cut into at the pre-planned locations ready for the new flanges to be welded in place.

It was necessary to install flanges to allow the pipework to be converted to 167mm press-fit stainless steel, which was the chosen pipework material in this instance. Additional manual isolation valves and purge points were installed throughout the gas system for future maintenance purposes. A section of pipework was removed at the gas entry point of the building to allow for the installation of the gas safety solenoid valve, manual isolation valves, and an additional purge point.

Once the installation was completed, all sections of the gas system were pressure tested, before safely purging the system with natural gas, issuing a gas-safe certification and finally reinstating the gas equipment on site. All welds throughout the project were NDT tested and certified by Ethos Inspection Services Ltd.

Conclusion

The project was completed to a high standard within the tight timescale. DS Smith Packaging’s production process was completely uninterrupted, and they are now able to proceed with their proposed water tank installation.

Working closely with Stuart from Goodfab Ltd throughout the project was a pleasure, and the quality of his welding was outstanding. Thank you to Scott from Ethos Inspection Services Ltd for his assistance with the necessary NDT weld inspections & certification.

All in all, it was a successful project for a satisfied customer.

Testimonial

“Enright Environmental were tasked with the re-routing of the old gas main supply to our site due to construction works being undertaken. From early discussions through to the completion of this project Enright Environmental showed true professionalism and mutual commitment to complete these works within the very narrow timeframe given.  I would like to thank the team for providing an exemplary service.”
